Features
TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 is a Windows Utility that rename your photos with the date and time you took the shot. Depending on the manufacturer, when you download your photos to your PC, the filenames look like IMG_0160.jpg, DCS014752.jpg, PIC05126.jpg, ... Some systems allow customization, some not ... When you download your pictures on your hard disk, the date and time of the files are the date and time of the shots. To allow a better management of your favorites pictures, TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 provides a very easy way to rename your pictures files according to a selected renaming mask. Three default renaming masks are available at startup and you can add up to 40 customized masks to fit your particular needs. Furthermore, TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 can use either the date and time of the photo or the Exif MetaData of the photo to perform the automatic renaming. TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 also provides a lot of informations about the pictures displayed on screen: standard File Data (Name, File Times, Resolution, ..), Exif MetaData and IPTC MetaData (if available). What's New in Release 3.2 Back to Top
The renaming masks of TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 are strings of characters that contains format specifications that will define how the original file name will be renamed. Format specifications always start with the character % (Percent) followed by either a single character or a character and a length specifier. The following format specifications are valid for TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2:
Here are some samples of possible masks for renaming pictures with TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 Note: Orignal File is: IMG_01234.jpg and File Time is: Saturday 16-Oct-2012 16:51:26 Important Reminder: A Windows File can't contain any of the following characters: \/:*?\"<>|
Files Selection Filters Back to Top TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 supports multiple file selection filters. In previous releases, the selection filter was simple and contains only one filter as ‘*.jpg’. Rules for Selection Filters:
In the print screen just below, the filters are: *09-aug*.jpg;*22-jul*.jpg. Only 14 files on the 48 present are listed. TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 also supports case sensitive selection. Checking the Box labeld 'Case Sensitive Selection' allows a further refinement of the files selection. EXIF MetaData Back to Top Exif stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. This is a specification for additional data about the picture that are stored in the picture file. Exif specifications describe dozens of picture metadata:
TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 reads and displays the Exif MetaData of the pictures (if those data are available) and proposes an option to use the Exif Date and Time of Shot (instead of the Date and Time of the File) to build the Date and Time parts of the file names. The complete Exif specifications can be found here . IPTC MetaData Back to Top IPTC MetaDat are additional data (stored in the jpg picture file) according to a specification designed and maintained by the members of the IPTC (International Press Telecommunicatiosn Council) Standards Committee. Typical data are: creator name, Description, Copyright note, Source, Subject, Keywords ... TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 reads and displays the IPTC MetaData of the pictures (if those data are available). In the next release, those data will be available for edition. The complete IPTC specifications can be found here . Installation of PhotoRenamer 3.2 Back to Top The installation of TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 is a straightforward process. Download the executable and double-click on it. Follow the instructions of the Installation Program. PhotoRenamer 3.2 Overview Back to Top TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 screens are made of five main parts:
Located on the top of the screen, the ribbon is the new standard paradigm of user interface. Buttons and other controls are enabled/disabled according to the active view and the user's actions. ![]() Located on the left pane of the screen, this control is used to select the directory containing the file(s) to rename. PhotoRenamer 3.1 handles three data views: Located on the right side of the screen, this window is used to preview the currently selected file and display its main attributes. The Output Pane, located on the bottom of the views, is the control where TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.1 adds constantly action log and operational informations. Most failure of file renaming are indicated in this control. TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 screen can be tailored to fit your needs:
The Image Preview can be toggled at request using the Ribbon Button labeled 'Image Preview' (Tab 'View').
When toggled off, the Preview window is hidden and the whole client space is used to display the Image List. This option is specially useful when selecting the advanced renaming features (see Files Renaming). Clicking on the button triggers the display of a DialogBox used to Select the desired Display Mode.
The Display Mode is also selectable with the dropdown menu associated with the Ribbon Button labeled 'File Path Display' (Tab 'View')
The Output Pane can be shown or hidden according to the current selection of the Ribbon Menu Button labeled 'Output Pane' (Tab 'View').
The Status Bar can be shown or hidden according to the current selection of the Ribbon Menu Button labeled 'Status Bar' (Tab 'View').
Use of PhotoRenamer 3.2: Files Renaming Back to Top TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 performs renaming according to two different scopes:
By default, TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.1 renames the selected file(s) in the directory where the file(s) is (are) located. Selecting a file in the File List enables the button labeled 'Rename Selected Files' as well as the same button in the Ribbon. The picture is previewed on the right with the most common propreties of the selected picture (if this option is activated - see Screen Customization). Clicking on the button 'Rename Selected Files' triggers the renaming of selected file(s) listed using the current renaming mask. The view is updated to confirm the operation. Note the informations displayed into the Output Pane ... Clicking on the button 'Rename All Files' triggers the renaming of all the file(s) listed using the current renaming mask. The view is updated to confirm the operation. Note the informations displayed into the Output Pane ... In both cases, the Data and Time used to rename the file(s) depends on the activation of the option 'Use Exif Data (if available)' located in the Ribbon. ![]() Th standard way of renaming files used byTGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.1 is to rename the files in the directory where the files are located. This feature is active when the Ribbon Check Box labeled 'Rename File(s) in Source Directory' is Checked. ![]() TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 proposes two additional ways to perform the renaming operation. These features are available when the Ribbon Check Box labeled 'Rename File(s) in Source Directory' is Unchecked. Once unchecked, the two options are enabled.
TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 performs files renaming according to a Renaming Mask. The File Renaming Mask are strings of characters that contains format specifications that will define how the original file name will be renamed. Format specifications always start with the character % (Percent) followed by either a single character or a character and a length specifier. supports 18 different format specifications (see Renaming Masks). TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 proposes two ways to edit the Renaming Masks:
Clicking on the button labeled 'Renaming Mask Edit' in the Ribbon Tab 'Options' triggers the display of a DialogBox used to Select the desired Edition Mode.
The Display Mode is also selectable with the dropdown menu associated with the Ribbon Button labeled 'Renaming Mask Edit' (Tab 'Options')
The Main Differences between those two Edit Modes are:
Use of PhotoRenamer 3.2: Standard Edition of Renaming Masks Back to Top Clicking on the button labeled 'Edit Mask' in the Files Renaming View triggers the display of the Mask Editing View. Selecting one of the existing masks makes it the current one (and the active one as soon as the button labeled 'Close View' is clicked). Two data are displayed:
Once the mask is detected as being not in the existing mask list, the button labeled 'Add Mask' is enabled. Clicking on this button adds the newly edited mask to the Mask List and triggers the data saving to a local file (named MaskData.pmd). Adding a new mask makes it automatically the current one ... Closing the View makes it the active mask for the next file(s) renaming operations ... Use of PhotoRenamer 3.2: Advanced Edition of Renaming Masks Back to Top Since Release 3.2, the Renaming Masks can be edited directly from the Renaming View ... TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 can be switched to Advanced Mode by either Clicking on the Ribbon button labeled 'Renaming Mask Edit' (Tab 'Options') or Selecting the Menu Item 'Advanced mask Edit' from the dropdown menu associated with the Ribbon Button labeled 'Renaming Mask Edit' (Tab 'Options') (as described here) In Advanced mode, the renaming mask can be modified directly from the EditBox Control of the ComboBox named 'Files Renaming Mask'. However, to avoid repetitive and useless processing, the update of the new file names in the File List is done ONLY when the button 'Apply Renaming Mask' is clicked. Use of PhotoRenamer 3.2: Handling of Files Extention Back to Top The Files Extention Processing is an other global option handled during the Renaming Process. There are three different ways to control the files extention:
Note that the File Extention Processing is shared by all masks. Use of PhotoRenamer 3.2: Support of Burst Mode and Poorly Discriminant Masks Back to Top There are two cases where Renaming can lead to equivalent file names:
Burst Mode ( also called Continuous High Speed) is a shooting mode which allow several shots by second. This means that the Exif MetaData 'Date and Time' could be the same for several images. Another situation where image names can be the same is the use of poorly discriminant renaming Mask. Suppose you have a directory with all the pictures taken during the wedding of your best friend and you decide to use the mask 'Ryan-Wedding-%d-%b-%Y'. In this case, all the pictures will share the same name !!! And this gives the following results: ![]() The first image with a shared name is called the Duplicate Root File. The other image(s) that share the same name is (are) called the Duplicate File(s). Note that TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 displays the Duplicate Root File and the Duplicate File(s) in two different colors. Both colors can be selected using the two Color Selection Buttons of the Ribbon labeled respectively 'Duplicate Root Color' and 'Duplicate Color'(Tab 'Options').
TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.1 proposes an additional option to differentiate the two types of files (Duplicate Root and Duplicate)
Select the Menu labeled 'Add Suffix Also to Original' of the Ribbon Menu Button 'Duplicate Files Handling' ![]() The Duplicate Root File and the Duplicate File(s) are renamed using the suffix template, incremented for each file. ![]() Select the Menu labeled 'Add Suffix to Duplicate Names' of the Ribbon Menu Button 'Duplicate Files Handling' ![]() The Duplicate Root File keeps its name without suffix and the Duplicate File(s) are renamed using the suffix template, incremented for each file. ![]() The suffix can be selected in the Mask Edition View and is shared by all masks. Fifteen different suffixes are available:
Use of PhotoRenamer 3.2: Update of the Dates and Times of Picture Files Back to Top The Operating System Windows maintains three File Times:
TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 can Update the File Creation Time and Modification Time based on the Picture Exif Time. Clicking on the button labeled 'Update File Time on Exif Time' in the Ribbon Tab 'Options' triggers the display of a DialogBox used to Select the desired File Time Processing.
The File Time Processing is also selectable with the dropdown menu associated with the Ribbon Button labeled 'Update File Time on Exif Time' (Tab 'Options')
Four options are available to process the Files Time and Date Status:
Note that the Last Access Time is always modified if one of the last three options is selected. The Time used is the Picture Exif Time (if available). Use of PhotoRenamer 3.2: Display of Pictures Thumbnail Back to Top TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 proposes three ways to Display the Files List Control:
To bring informations while waiting for update, TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 displays a Progress Dialog Box updated with files name and files count.
At any time, there is a possibility to abord thumbnails reading. This will speed up the process and makes an automatic switch to Straight Display (No Thumbnail in the Left Column of the Files List Control). Use of PhotoRenamer 3.2: MetaData Viewing Back to Top Double-clicking a row in the File List in the Files Renaming View triggers the display of the MetaData Details View. The MetaData Details View can also be displayed by clicking the button labeled 'View Image Details' located in the Ribbon.
Closing the View with the the button labeled 'Close View' allows to return to the Files Renaming View PhotoRenamer 3.2: Application Look Customization Back to Top The Look of TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 can be tailored to your taste. The two options are exclusive: either you select a background texture or you select a Windows Thema.
Five thema are available: Three textures are available: The textures can be selected from the different Ribbon buttons in the 'View' Tab. Selecting 'None' allows the use of Windows themes.
By default, TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 displays Duplicate Root File in Dark Red and Duplicate File(s) in Red Color. But this can be tailored by selecting these two colors using the Ribbon Color Selection Buttons ... ![]() Application Log of PhotoRenamer 3.2 Back to Top TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 keeps track of all importants informations and events that occured during the use of the application in the Output Pane located at the bottom of the different views. Check of Update of PhotoRenamer 3.2 Back to Top Once a month, at startup, TGMDev PhotoRenamer 3.2 checks for available update. At any time, the check can be triggered by clicking the Ribbon button labeled 'Check for Update'(Tab 'Help')
The DialogBox displays the local version (the one you're using ...) and the Web version ( the last one available, now V 3.2)
